Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has launched its inaugural Students’ Week celebration, encouraging students to embrace learning, unity, and self-expression beyond the classroom.

Themed “Educate, Participate, Celebrate,” the week-long event was described as a defining moment for the university’s student body by Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President, Kane Nana Francis.
“This is not just an event on a calendar; it is a powerful expression of our collective identity, resilience, and growth as a student body,” he said at the launch.
He urged students to go beyond passive participation and take ownership of the celebration. “True impact comes when we rise above apathy. Your participation is your power. This week is a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, not just to celebrate our achievements, but to honour our diversity and shared journey,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson expressed gratitude to the University Council for approving the maiden celebration and described it as an opportunity for student empowerment.
“It is your week. Whether this becomes the first and last or the first of many depends on how you make it count. Own it, lead it, and ensure it lives on,” she said.

Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah encouraged students to seize the opportunities that tertiary education offers, not only to shape their own futures but also to contribute to national development.
“In a rapidly evolving technological world, critical thinking, innovation, and continuous learning are essential for success,” he said. He urged students to cultivate resilience, curiosity, and discipline, reminding them that “education is not merely the accumulation of facts but the development of the mind to think, lead, and effect change.”
Professor Akwasi Acheampong Anning, Deputy Director of Student Affairs, highlighted the celebration’s role in showcasing the university’s diversity and promoting student wellbeing. He encouraged students to relax, recharge, and express themselves through the wide range of activities planned.
Guest speaker Mr. Michael Marmon-Halm, CEO of Fairafric Ghana Limited, shared his personal journey from academic setbacks and unemployment to leading a globally recognised chocolate company. He urged students to embrace failure as a path to growth.
“Use your education not just for personal gain, but to transform communities and reshape Ghana’s future,” he said.

Professor Marian Asantewah Nkansah, Director of Student Affairs, described the launch as a small beginning with great promise.
“No matter your background, every kind of education will eventually make sense. It’s up to you to harness it,” she said.
The 2025 KNUST Students’ Week Celebration includes seminars, cultural showcases, talent exhibitions, and sports competitions, all designed to foster holistic student development and a renewed sense of community.
